China, the Asian superpower is now close to buidling a rival of GPS( Global positioning system) which is controlled by U.S Air Force and used worldwide in maps for civil and military purposes.
GPS is used worldwide as major tool for positioning systems, from Smartphones to Cars and from Airliners to Missile technologies. China can not risk it's military's intrest on US based system. It is expected that system will provide accuracy to civilians for 10 meters while military based version and licensed Chinese government institutions will enjoy an accuracy of 10 centimetres. However military based version outside China is only availble to Pakistani military.
Chinese named the system "Beidou" after the famed star constellation known in other countries as "Big Dipper".
A prjoect which started back in 1990s is expected to be completed by 2020 under President Xi vision. Beiduo is expected to cost approx $10.6 billion in 2020 at time of Global Launch. Beiduo is already operational in China and neighbouring countries and will be available around the globe in 2020. This year a 18 satellites were launched, taking the number in operation to 40.
Beiduo is supported by Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi already from a long time. Chip maker Qualcomm has also stated in favour. In Automotive sector Volkswagen is expected to integrate the system in 2020 while Japanese based Toyota is also in talks. It is expected that Airbus and Boeing both giants are going to integrate system soon.
In order to compete US and west in Aerospace China is also building commerical Airliners and sending probes and missions to space at a rapid pace. Now China has also provided an alternative to U.S based GPS.
