Whenever we hear the word hepatitis, what comes to our mind is death, it's because of the fact that, Pakistan has one of the highest number of Hepatitis C infected patients worldwide second only to Egypt. Today we are trying to explain the facts and break the myths regarding hepatitis C.
First of all for a common person, who doesn't understand scientific terms, what hepatitis C infection means?
Hepatitis means inflammation of liver, an important organ which serves as synthetic and filtration centre of our body. Another important point is that hepatitis doesn't always means an infection. Hepatitis can occur because of other reasons, however the most common cause of Hepatitis in our country is Hepatitis C virus.
There are many different types of this virus inculding Hepatitis A virus, B virus, C virus, D virus and E virus. B and C types are the only common types causing long term infections, while A and E are short term infections spreading via food. Hepatitis D virus requires Hepatitis B virus and can't infect the person without Hepatitis B.
As explained above among type B and C, type C is the most common, we will focus on Hepatitis C.
Common modes of spread of Hepatitis C virus are, via used syringes, not screening blood before transfusion, use of un hygienic instruments by barbers and unprotected sex.
Next question is how one could know that he or she is infected from virus or not? The answer is screening for the virus. Screening kits cost not more than 300PKR for both Hepatitis B and C and it's very simple to perform the test even at home without requiring a lab and it only take 3 minutes.
What if someone is screened postive for Hepatitis C virus? There is nothing to worry about. Most of the time screening results are true but in very small number of people they might be wrong. Screening doesn't always means that you are infected, in very small number of people result could be wrong. Next step is you require a test which will give you surety that either you have an infection of Hepatitis C virus or not and that test is ELISA.
Now if you are negative on ELISA than there is no infection, but if ELISA came postive in your case than you should not take it easy but keep it in mind that now it's possible to cure Hepatitis C. You need to consult a doctor who is specialised in Gastroenterology. Once you consult your doctor he will advise you another investigation, that test is PCR which will tell your doctor about status of disease in your body, in addition to PCR few other investigations are reuqired naming complete blood count, liver function tests and Ultrasound Abdomen. After these test doctor will advise you medicine and ask you for next follow up visit. Another fact about Hepatitis C is that it can be cured only before the liver is uncompensated. It means that once you have developed the complications of disease than it can't be cured but can only be managed. Most common complications of Hep C are Ascites (accumulaton of fluid inside a space in your abdomen) and Hematemsis(blood in vomit).
Usually it takes six month to cure Hepatitis C virus. Another important point to keep in mind is that once you have started the course don't stop it without completing it or consulting your doctor.
A common saying is that prevention is always better than cure. As mode of spread are mentioned above try to avoid them as much as you can. And if you have got the infection than immediately start the treatment.
